Research Interests

My research centers on two areas:

    1. improvement in grape and wine production, based on studies of grape and yeast speciation, cold resistance genes in grapes, natural yeasts on grapes, in the winery, and yeast population and chemical changes during spontaneous fermentation. The goal is to improve the quality of Ohio wines.
    2. the cell and molecular biology of anaerobic protozoan parasites with emphasis on trichomonads, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Hexamita. I am investigating their subcellular organization, organelle (hydrogenosome) biogenesis, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, arginine metabolism, protease activities and differentiation (excystment and excystation of Giardia and Cryptosporidium) utilizing techniques of molecular biology, cell biology and enzymology.
